There’s more truth than you may think to the old saying “there’s a time for everything, and everything in its time.” Researchers have found that the body has a host of rhythms affecting its chemistry. These determine how you feel and how well you function. Called circadian rhythms (from Latin meaning “about a day”), these “clocks” regulate such diverse body indicators as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood sugar, hormones and heartbeat. Because body functions can vary as much as 80 percent depending on the times of day, an early morning blood pressure reading can be deceptive on its own.

Doctors have found that heart attacks come most frequently in the morning. So do most road and factory accidents; nightshift workers in general tend to be slower and make more wrong decisions.

Similarly, a high-calorie meal eaten at breakfast can result in little or no weight gain, but the same meal eaten at dinnertime can lead to weight gain. This is because carbohydrates burn faster at the higher metabolic rates – or more intense activity – that occur in most people during the day rather than in the evening.

If circadian rhythms get disturbed by such factors as jet travel or change in sleep or eating patterns, it can take several weeks before a new set of patterns emerges. This explains the phenomenon of jet lag.

Medically, doctors are studying circadian rhythms to ascertain susceptibility to disease and the impact of drugs. In cancer research, for example, doctors are looking into whether drug and radiation therapy is more effective if it’s administered at certain specific times of day.

The key point is that if you are aware of the time of day you operate at peak efficiency, you can try to schedule your activities accordingly. Conversely, don’t force yourself to face a difficult task when your body rhythms are at their low point.
